Subject: Old Mikuni carb hook-up

The Rotax 582 on my S10 has the old dual Mikuni BN carbs (round body not the newer super BN's) fed by a dual outlet Mikuni fuel pump. Two fuel lines go from the outlets of the pump to each carb's fuel inlet. This makes sense. However, the fuel return from each carb is routed to the pulse input nipple of the same carb via a short connecting fuel line. What is idea here?
There is air and a little fuel in each connecting line. These are about six inches long and are open so fuel can and does flow from the fuel return into the pulse input. Is this just some way of capping off the pulse pump or is it driven by some residual pulse in the fuel return line? Is there a better way to hook up these carbs? Thanks. (Yes, the engine does run in this configuration.) == George
