Jeff and I have done this successfully and still use the fiberglass tanks. Let me explain what we did.
We had a piece of aluminum threaded to 1 1/4 inch, then machined the inside smooth. A cap was made to fit within a few thousands of an inch from the inside of the smooth part of the pipe threaded piece. An O-ring was installed to make a good seal. See the pictures.
Note that the brass fitting in the cap is actually a 3/16 barb to 1/8 pipe fitting with the barb chopped off smooth. Inside the fitting is a 3/16 dia ball which is retained with safety wire, and acts a vent, and a check valve when flying inverted. We used a 1 1/4 pipe tap to make the thread in the fiberglass while the wing is upside down to keep the trash out of it. The we used JB Weld to plug the factory vent which is within reach through the filler hole.
